When Rock Meets Social Media

Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’ came on the radio the other day (the one from Armageddon way back in 1998) and it gave me an idea.

In this blog, I’m going to tell you how you can alter your settings to help make sure you don’t miss updates from your favourite Facebook and Instagram accounts. Or, if you use them for business, what you can ask your followers to do to see more of your posts.

Tenuous, I know, but a true story.

‘See First’ on Facebook

You can see posts from your favourite pages and friends at the top of your newsfeed by selecting ‘See First’ on up to 30 accounts.

You won’t get a notification when they post, and the posts aren’t ranked (so you won’t see posts from the first one you choose first, the second one next etc.) but the page or person won’t know you’ve selected them.

For pages you already follow or like, and people you are friends with:

- Click the three dots next to ‘News Feed’ and select ‘Edit Preferences’

- You can then choose who you want to see first from the list

For pages you don’t already follow or like:

- If you want to just follow the page, click ‘Follow’ and a drop-down menu should pop up

- Click See First

- If you want to Like the page, hit Like and you will automatically be following them. Hover over Follow and the drop-down menus will appear

- Click See First

Post Notifications on Instagram

You can turn on notifications for each specific user you want to see more from, that way you get an alert every time they post a photo.

All you need to do is visit the user’s profile, click the three dots in the top right-hand corner and select ‘Turn on Post Notifications.’ The user won’t know you’ve turned on notifications.

You might still get notifications from people you follow when you haven’t selected to, but that sometimes happens when they haven’t posted for a while.
