I could talk about Charity Meetup until the cows come home, but I’m sure you haven’t got all day so I’ll keep it brief.
Charity Meetup events are fun and welcoming. They offer an opportunity to discuss topical issues with peers, foster connections, share skills, and give and get support in a relaxed but constructive way.
Events are open to anyone working in the sector, plus freelancers, agencies and consultants who support charities, as long as they agree not to promote products or services - they are there to help, not sell.
Our Birmingham events always begin with a fun icebreaker to calm any nerves before Hope Adie and I run group and pairs facilitated networking sessions. In these sessions, we give everyone a point to discuss or a theme to build discussions around.

Charity Meetup - a potted history
Charity Meetup was established in 2015 by Dawn Newton, who held events in Aylesbury and London. I wanted to bring the events to the Midlands, so we set about planning to launch a Birmingham group with Claire Colvine (who co-hosted with me until December 2020 when Hope Adie and I teamed up).
Along came COVID so, with people in the sector needing support more than ever, we launched my group and held events online. Soon after we began, Dawn went on maternity leave. That left just my virtual events which everyone could come along to, and we had attendees from all over the UK and further afield.
When restrictions were lifted, Hope and I trialled in-person events in Birmingham. We continued these every quarter alongside the monthly virtual events until January 2024, when we surveyed the group again and decided to swap the events over. We now hold face-to-face monthly Meetups at Manahatta in Birmingham and plan to have virtual networking and seminars every quarter alongside.
Dawn is back hosting events in London again so, if you’re from that area, drop me a line and I can point you in her direction.
